How can we change?

Go Tray-less

  • Reduces water, energy, and detergent consumption because trays no longer need to be washed (lower costs) (Deardorff, 2008).
  • Reduces food waste because students have a smaller surface to place food on (Deardorff, 2008).
  • Causes students to eat less, reducing unnecessary food consumed and increasing the health of students (Deardorff, 2008).

Composting

  • Has proven to be an effective way to limit the amount of food waste that ends up in landfills (Witkowsky, 2009).
  • Reduced amounts of waste achieved by composting saves universities money on landfill fees (Witkowsky, 2009).

Offer Instead of Serve

  • Providing diners with many choices at meals and allowing them to autonomously pick their food reduces food waste (McCaffree, 2009).
